Sharklet Technologies Origin Story

Whales, ships, and other objects that travel through the water accumulate algae, seaweed, barnacles, and other types of bio-fouling that decrease their swimming efficiency. But sharks are different – despite moving slowly through the water, their skin remains clean. When Dr. Tony Brennan first discovered this unique function, he wonders if he took the design of sharkskin and shrink it down, smaller than what humans can see, has it the same effect on bacteria?
The answer is Yes. Dr. Anthony Brennan, the Founder of Sharklet, give a try to a project to increase the efficiency of the antibiotical surfaces turned into a major breakthrough for the control of bacteria. And he did it!
Founded in 2007, Sharklet Technologies, Inc. uses the Sharklet micropattern to control bacteria and other microorganisms. Dr. Tony Brennan, STI has licensed the technology to develop medical devices and consumer applications utilizing the Sharklet pattern.

So Sharklet Technologies finally announces a new product line of adhesively backed film. The film has patent-protected technology on one side and can be adhered to multi-touch surfaces in public places such as cashier and POS desks, elevator buttons, door push bars and bathroom stall doors in retail centres, hospitals, offices, hotels, yoga mats, and public transportation to reduce adherence, colonization and transference of germs.
That is perfect news to yogis because they need not clean the mat very often. With innovative Non-Toxic technology, the Sharklet mat keeps you away from bacteria and microbes. You would feel confident and ready. What’s more, the Sharklet mat is 7.2*2.6’’ bigger than any other mats, and perfectly cushioned for joint support, antimicrobial, dry-wicking and slip-free, wet or dry. As you move, luxe colors match your mood, minimizing restrictions and letting you give it your all.

The Science of Sharklet mat

Sharklet Technologies, Inc. holds key patents related to using microtopography to control bacteria. Sharklet has six different patents from the United States Patent Office relating to uses of the micropattern, the dimensions of different Sharklet patterns, and various medical device applications.
The Sharklet surface is comprised of millions of microscopic features arranged in a distinct diamond pattern. The structure of the pattern alone inhibits bacteria from attaching, colonizing and forming biofilms. Sharklet contains no toxic additives or chemicals and uses no antibiotics or antimicrobials.
Sharklet draws inspiration from the shape and pattern of the dermal denticles of sharkskin. Sharks are resistant to fouling organisms in the water including algae and barnacles. –Which is used to Sharklet Yoga Mat.

The Soul of Sharklet

The core idea is that nature has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, and microbes are the consummate engineers. After billions of years of research and development, failures are fossils, and what surrounds us is the secret to survival.
While human engineers work to solve all manner of problems the world faces, animals and plants have had a 4 billion year head start. Many of the species around today have already optimized themselves to face these challenges – they wouldn’t be around otherwise. By examining nature, experts can extrapolate ideas and designs to solve similar problems faced by humans.

The Mission of Sharklet

The Sharklet is committed to innovation of biotechnological technology, and accelerate the development of a newly enhanced wound dressing technology to encourage healing. Not only for most environmentally friendly yoga products but also for medical devices where chemical-free bacterial inhibition is desired as well as high-touch surfaces prone to bacterial contamination.
